Microsoft Duo Updated Leaks and Confirmed Specs

The future Microsoft Surface Duo is highly sought by many. It is because the company will bet on Android in a two-screen format, which aims to stay halfway between a smartphone and a compact mini PC.

The company has given little data on the Surface Duo, apart from confirming that it will use two separate screens and will fold utilizing a 360º hinge. Microsoft doesn’t seem to trust the flexible panels that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip uses, which are not yet mature.

The Microsoft Surface Duo will mount two 5.6-inch AMOLED screens, with support for the Surface Pen. That is the only confirmed thing. But the development of the device is very advanced. Therefore, many other details have been leaked.

Microsoft Duo Updated Leaks

First of all, we should not confuse it with the Surface Neo. It is a larger model that will use Windows 10X, also based on the double screen.

Now, the Microsoft Duo will have a Snapdragon 855 processor, 8 cores, and with 4G connectivity. It was Qualcomm’s flagship chip for 2019, and Microsoft has declined to use the recent Snapdragon 865 because it would have to redesign the Surface Duo to accommodate a 5G modem.

It will include 6 GB of RAM, and two configurations will be offered with 64 GB or 256 GB of storage, which cannot be expanded using memory cards, probably because its thickness will be only 4.8 mm.

It is something that will also affect the battery, which would be 3,460 mAh with fast charge. If this figure is finally confirmed, it could suffer autonomy problems. In fact, other similar devices usually mount larger batteries, without having to feed a double screen.

The Surface Duo camera is expected to be 11 MP, and to serve as both a rear and front sensor, when rotated 360º. It is not a surprise, because we are talking about a device-oriented to productivity, and which does not seek high photographic performance.

Although Microsoft has confirmed only the details of the screen, the specifications below are considered to be already closed. Here are the details:

  • Display: 2 5.6-inch AMOLED panels (1,800 x 1,350p each).
  • Processor: Snapdragon 855.
  • RAM: 6 GB.
  • Internal storage: 64 GB or 256 GB.
  • Camera: 11 MP f / 2.0 (rotatable, serves as front and rear).
  • Connectivity: 4G / LTE.
  • Ports and sensors: USB-C, fingerprint sensor, and touch pen support.
  • Battery: 3,460 mAh with fast charge.
  • Operating system: Android 10.

Android 10 And The Challenge Of The Double Screen

The software is going to be Microsoft’s biggest challenge to make the dual display of the Surface Duo useful. It will be possible to use a different app on each screen, and move elements between them, but also that the apps take advantage of the space on the two screens.

Although Android 10 has dual screen support, very few developers have adapted their applications. This is because the percentage of smartphones that would take advantage of them is very low. So far, there are only Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate Xs.

Microsoft itself will adapt all its own apps to the double screen of the Surface Duo. This action is to take advantage of space and to move elements between them. Some of Google’s apps have been optimized, including Google Maps. But overall, this Android 10 adaption will be challenging.
