Nintendo has announced a new Paper Mario game for the Switch.

Over the last few weeks, fans have been criticising Nintendo’s lack of planned game releases for the rest of 2020. However, the tech giant dropped a giant surprise today (May 14) with the announcement of Paper Mario: The Origami King.

The game is a brand new instalment in the Paper Mario series which launched with the Nintendo 64’s Paper Mario in 2000. Since then, a Paper Mario game has released on every subsequent Nintendo console and The Origami King marks the franchise’s debut on the Nintendo Switch console.

The Origami King was announced by Nintendo with a two-minute trailer which included new gameplay footage and confirmed the game’s focus on comedy like previous iterations of the franchise. The trailer included footage of a 2D Mario exploring a giant colourful world, as well as footage from various mini-games and enemy fights.

According to Nintendo, The Origami King will feature new gameplay including a new “ring-based” battle system which allows players to solve puzzles to attack multiple enemies. Mario will also benefit from a new ability called 1000-Fold Arms which allows Mario to stretch, pull, and peel the landscape around him to solve puzzles.

An official description of the game issued by Nintendo reads: “Mario faces one of his most thrilling challenges yet in Paper Mario: The Origami King when the dangerous King Olly unleashes his plan to fold the entire world.

“Just when matters couldn’t get worse, he’s bound Princess Peach’s Castle in giant, coloured streamers and transported it to a distant mountain. He’s even transformed Bowser’s minions into Folded Soldiers and enlisted them in his treacherous case.”

A Rich Paper Origami World

Throughout his journey, Mario will receive help from the Toads and Bowser, and he will partner with Olivia – King Olly’s good-natured sister in a bid to stop Olly and save Princess Peach. Mario will explore a rich world filled with exciting mini-games, dozens of mysteries, and plenty of puzzles to solve.

Nick Chavez, the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo of America, said in a statement: “Paper Mario: The Origami King delivers a grand new adventure on Nintendo Switch for players to wrap themselves up in. This game marks the debut of the Paper Mario series on Nintendo Switch, expanding the vast library of games with another standout entry in a beloved franchise.”

A new instalment in the Paper Mario franchise was first announced by VGC back in March where the website was told that Nintendo would be releasing new Mario games this year to celebrate Super Mario Bros.’s 35th anniversary. Alongside Paper Mario, remasters of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy will reportedly launch this year too.Paper Mario: The Origami King will launch on the Nintendo Switch on July 17th for $59.99 (£49.99) and can be pre-ordered now.
