‘The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild’ Sequel Will Not Release This Year

The sequel to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will not release this year, according to new reports.

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is a Nintendo exclusive and one of the biggest games available on the Switch. Launched in 2017, the RPG game features a giant open world which players can explore freely, indulge in challenging combat, and solve puzzles.

The game received stellar reviews from critics and fans alike, beating Sony’s exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn for Game of the Year. Fans have eagerly been awaiting a sequel which was revealed at E3 2019 but recent reports have suggested that the game will not be launching this year as many have thought.

Nintendo recently held an earnings call with investors where it announced games planned for a release over their next fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. Sadly, the Breath Of The Wild sequel was not part of the list, suggesting that the game is going to launch in either 2021 or 2022.

Some believe Nintendo simply wanted to avoid spoiling an upcoming announcement of the game, although no Nintendo Direct has been announced for this month. However, it’s unlikely that Nintendo would have withheld such an important game from the important presentation.

The game was initially thought to drop this year as the game has been in development. However, rumours from last year suggested that the game had been pushed back and the current COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the game’s development and release plans.

While details of the sequel are sparse, we know that planning for it began when developers were working on DLC for Breath Of The Wild. Reports suggest that the team came up with “too many ideas” fort he DLC which they couldn’t implement and chose to use them instead for the sequel.

In a 2019 interview with IGN, Legend Of Zelda series director Eiji Aonuma stated that the sequel is heavily inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, a large open-world game with a deep storyline that was praised universally by critics and fans.

Nintendo’s Sales Milestones

Over the last few months Nintendo has experienced a sales boom. In the last year, the company sold a whopping 21 million Switch consoles worldwide and around 169 million Switch games.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons reportedly sold over 11 million copies in 12 days between its release and the end of March 2020. The huge numbers make the game the fastest-selling Switch video game to date and its combined sales have outsold all of Animal Crossing: Wild World and New Leaf’s lifetime sales.

As part of its fiscal year earnings report, Nintendo updated its sales figures for Switch games up to March 31st, 2020. It’s top selling games are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe of 24.77 million copies, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate of 18.84 million, The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild of 17.41 million, Super Mario Odyssey of 17.41 million, and Pokémon: Sword and Shield with 17.37 million.
