‘Animal Crossing_ New Horizons’ Tool Guide - How To Get All Tools Small

Tools in Animal Crossing are important. They’ll let you explore your entire island, gather resources, and fill up your Museum (Or bell purse) with fossils, insects, and fish. However, unlike past Animal Crossing games, the tools work a little differently here and obtaining them isn’t as simple as rushing into Nook’s Cranny – you need to work for them this time.

If you’re new to New Horizons and need some guidance on obtaining all tools or you simply want to know about the wider selection available to you, keep reading on.

Flimsy Tools And Their Requirements

Flimsy Axe

The Flimsy Axe, the weakest axe available, can be obtained on the very first day on your island. You can use this axe to hit trees for wood but it breaks quickly. To get it, simply speak to Tom Nook in the Resident Services tent and donate two fish or bugs. In return, Tom Nook will reward you with the Flimsy Axe DIY recipe which requires 5x Tree Branch and 1x Stone. You can use the Flimsy Axe to hit trees for resources but this Axe cannot knock down trees.

Flimsy Shovel

The Flimsy Shovel is the weakest shovel available but can only be unlocked once you’ve crafted a Flimsy Axe and donated five insects or fish to Tom Nook to invite Blathers. Once Blathers has set up a tent on your island, he will give you the Flimsy Shovel DIY recipe which requires 5x Hardwood. You can use this tool to dig holes and hit rocks for resources but it breaks quickly.

Flimsy Fishing Rod & Net

Both the Flimsy Fishing Rod and Net can be obtained on your first day but they must be created through DIY recipes. To get them, you must place your tent on your island as well as the tents of your first two villagers. After this, you’ll need to collect Tree Branches and Fruit for Tom Nook, enjoy his party, and take a nap to end the game’s tutorial.

When you wake up, your game will follow real-time and Tom Nook will provide you with the recipes for the Flimsy Fishing Rod and Flimsy Net. Both the Flimsy Fishing Rod and Flimsy Net require 5x Tree Branches to create.

Flimsy Watering Can

In New Horizons, you can unlock the Flimsy Watering Can by donating four insects or fish to Blathers. He will provide you with the DIY recipe for the Flimsy Watering Can which requires 5x Softwood.

Upgraded Tools And Their Requirements

To get an upgraded version of the axe, watering can, shovel, fishing rod, and net, you’ll need to head over to the Nook Stop terminal at Resident Services and purchase the Pretty Good Tools DIY Recipe for 3,000 Nook Miles. This small item will give you DIY recipes for the following tools:

Stone Axe

Fishing Rod & Net

There isn’t much of a difference between the Flimsy and regular Fishing Rod and Net. Both Rods allow you to catch all fish and all Nets allow you to catch bugs, but the regular versions of the tools have longer durability. You’ll need 1x Flimsy Fishing Rod and 1x Iron Nugget to construct the Fishing Rod and you’ll need 1x Flimsy Net and 1x Iron Nugget to construct the Net.

Watering Can

Like with the Fishing Rod and Net, there isn’t much of a difference between the Flimsy and regular Watering Can. The regular version of the tool simply lasts longer than the Flimsy version. To construct the Watering Can, you’ll need 1x Flimsy Watering Can and 1x Iron Nugget.

Ladder

The ladder is the final tool you unlock and will allow you to climb to higher points of your island. There are multiple steps you need to complete to unlock this special tool. First, you must have built a campsite, build Nook’s Cranny and the Able Sister shops, and have built the Museum. After this, Tom Nook will inform you that three new residents are looking to move to your island.

Tom Nook will ask you to build a bridge for the upcoming residents and will provide you with a Bridge DIY recipe which requires 4x Log Stakes, 4x Clay, and 4x Stone. Once you’ve built the bridge and placed it, you will need to wait for construction to complete the next day and speak to Tom Nook.

Once the bridge has been constructed, Tom Nook will give you three housing kits for the new villagers and you will be required to place them around your island. You’ll also have to build specific furniture for the villagers for them to move in and Tom Nook will provide you with several new DIY recipes including one for the Ladder which requires 4x Wood, 4x Hardwood, and 4x Softwood. The Ladder cannot break.

Vaulting Pole

The Vaulting Pole allows you to jump over rivers on your island before bridges can be built. To unlock the Vaulting Pole DIY recipe, you’ll need to have constructed Blathers’ tent and must give him five fish or insects. It requires 5x Softwood and, like the Ladder, the Vaulting Pole cannot break.

Slingshot

The Slingshot is a tool that can be used to pop balloons floating around your island. These balloons offer you special rewards including DIY recipes, furniture, bells, resources, and clothing. To unlock the Slingshot, you must purchase the DIY recipe from Timmy for 225 bells. The Slingshot requires 5x Hardwood and does break, but not often.

We hope this guide has explained how you can unlock all of the tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you’d like to know how to unlock Golden Toolsm Wands, and the Tool Ring, keep an eye out for the second part of this guide.
