Sony Reveals New DualSense Controller For The PS5

Sony Reveals New DualSense Controller For The PS5

Sony has unveiled the new control for the PlayStation 5 console.

The controller includes some major changes compared to previous PlayStation controllers. Firstly, Sony has decided to forego the DualShock name in favour of a brand new name; the DualSense.

As seen in Sony’s images of the controller, it features a two-tone body as well as a chunkier designer. It retains the lightbar from the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller, but it is smaller and now faces the player. The controller also features the central touchpad feature on the DualShock 4.

It includes a built-in microphone as well as a USB-C port for charging. The share button has been removed and swapped out for a ‘Create’ button which will reportedly allow players to create, edit and share gameplay, but more details on that later.

The most important new addition to the controller is haptic feedback which provides resistance to player movement and “powerful sensations” when playing games, such as driving through mud. The controller’s triggers now have adaptive feedback so players can feel the tension and release when firing a bow and more.

According to the blog post, Sony PlayStation went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups before deciding on the controller’s design. The company states that the DualSense underwent testing by a dozen gamers with a variety of hand sizes in order to ensure maximum comfort for all players.

PlayStation states that its goal with the DualSense is to “give gamers the feeling of being transporter into the game world as soon as they open the box.”. They said: “We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension o themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!”

A New Generation

Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in a statement on the official PlayStation Blog: “DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5.

“The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future.”

Jim Ryan continued: “To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

The new PlayStation 5 console is set to launch later this year. We already know most of the specs of the console as reported here. And although Xbox has already unveiled the design of its new Xbox Series X console, Sony PlayStation has yet to unveil their console’s design.

What’s more, the price of both consoles hasn’t been revealed. Per Ryan’s comments, however, we can assume that Sony will officially unveil the console within the coming months. So stay tuned.
