Square Enix Announces New ‘Nier Replicant’ For PS4, PC And Xbox One

Square Enix has announced the development of Nier Replicant, an upgraded version of the original Nier video game.

The news was announced in a livestream celebrating the RPG’s tenth anniversary. In it, publisher Square Enix revealed that Toylogic, not original developers Platinum, is working on an upgrade for the original game.

According to Square Enix, the upgraded game will include new voice work, a new recording of the original score, additional bonus tracks from composer Keiichi Okabe, new characters, and according to rumours, potentially new endings.

Soon after the reveal, the game was announced on the Nier Series’ Twitter account. The tweet reads: “#Nier Replicant ver 1.22474487139…, an upgraded version of the original, is now in development for #PS4, #Xbox One and #Steam!”

A short description of the upgraded original game reads: “Enter an apocalyptic world as you play as a brother on a quest to cure his sister of a deadly disease in this unique action RPG.”

Unfortunately, no release date was announced for the upgraded game. However, reports have suggested that the game will be released later this year, marking Nier’s tenth anniversary year.

Also announced in the livestream was a mobile game named Nier Reincarnation. The mobile game is being developed by Applibot and will reportedly release on iOS and Android. It will be free to play but will most likely include microtransactions.

Not much else is known about the mobile game, but Square Enix has shared a trailer you can watch below:

Finally, Square Enix announced in the livestream that the latest entry in the franchise, Nier Automata, will be joining the Xbox Game Pass on April 2nd. This means users who are subscribed to the service can play the RPG.

Square Enix’s Bad News

While news of the games has excited players, Square Enix did reveal some unfortunate news regarding the release of its upcoming game Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

The game is due to launch on April 10th but Square Enix has issued a statement on their website stating that that current quarantine and social distancing measures may delay gamers from receiving physical copies of their game or picking it up from shops on release day.

The statement reads: “As we prepare for the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake on April 10, we wanted to keep you updated on how the proactive measures being taken to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus are likely to affect the distribution and retail landscape in western regions at launch.”

Square Enix states that current measures which restrict the distribution of non-essential items may result in the delays. The publisher states: “This does not mean that box copies of Final Fantasy VII Remake will not be dispatched, it just means that we cannot control the date the game may arrive.” Square Enix finished the statement by urging customers to check retailer websites regarding the status of their pre-orders and to ensure that all mailing addresses and contact details are up to date. The news comes after Capcom issued a similar statement over the release of the Resident Evil 3 remake this week.
