Animal Crossing New Horizons Experiences Record-Breaking UK Launch

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has broken sales records in its first weekend in the UK. , becoming the biggest launch of a single game for the Nintendo Switch.

Yesterday, reported that the game, which launched on Friday (March 20th) and has become a popular hit in the UK. According to the report, New Horizons sold more copies in its first weekend than the launch of all previous iterations combined.

What’s more, New Horizons’ launch is 3.5 times bigger than the 3DS’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the previous game in the series. Finally, the New Horizons release marks the biggest single-game launch for the Nintendo Switch since the console’s release.

According to, if you compare the sales for both Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield together, the games experienced a bigger first sales week than New Horizons.

However, the sales do not include digital downloads of which may have been a higher number due to the coronavirus pandemic. The UK Government has urged those in the UK to remain at home, possible leading many to purchase the digital version of the game. Unfortunately, Nintendo does not share digital download data.

New Horizons outsold Bethesda’s Doom Eternal which also launched on March 20th for the PS4, Google Stadia, Xbox One, and PC. A Nintendo Switch release is planned but no date has been announced yet.

Other games New Horizons outsold include Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, FIFA 20, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The full list of the 10 bestselling games for the week ending March 21st is:

A Launch Gift & A Major Update

To celebrate the release of New Horizons, Nintendo gifts everyone who purchases a copy of the game a Nintendo Switch console. A major update for the game was rolled out on Thursday (March 19th), giving players access to online multiplayer and more.

What’s more, Nintendo gifted all users with an in-game Switch which, when pressed, displays the Switch’s real boot-up screen. Users who purchased the limited Animal Crossing-themed Switch will receive that in-game, while all user users receive the basic red and blue model.

What’s more, the update includes preparation for the upcoming Bunny Day event which takes place between April 1st and April 12th. When the real-world’s date reaches April 1st, Nintendo will release an update to activate the Bunny Day event, which is inspired by Easter.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons whisks players off to a deserted island owned by Tom Nook. The game sees you build up the island into a bustling town with villagers, shops, and a museum.

The game’s peaceful nature has led it to become one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises. Amid the current coronavirus pandemic, New Horizons may be just what the world needs to get through the next few months.
