PlayStation’s ‘The Last Of Us’ To Be Adapted Into HBO TV Series

Sony PlayStation’s critically acclaimed video game The Last Of Us is getting an HBO television adaption.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed Chernobyl television show, is teaming up with HBO once again to adapt Sony PlayStation’s video game The Last Of Us.

Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the game and its upcoming sequel The Last Of Us Part II, will work with Mazin to write and executive produce the series. Carolyn Strauss, who previously worked on HBO’s Chernobyl and Game Of Thrones, will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, the President of the game’s development studio Naughty Dog.

Further reports have revealed that the show will be a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. It will be the first TV show from PlayStation Productions with more to follow.

The video game, which released in 2013, is set in a post-apocalyptic America wrecked by a zombie pandemic. It tells the story between smuggler Joel and teenager Ellie who could be the cure to the virus. After Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie across the US, the pair are forced to depend on each other for survival and form an unbreakable bond.

The HBO show will reportedly cover the first game which won numerous awards and received critical acclaim, and it may adapt events from the sequel which is set to release May this year.

What They Say

In a statement, Mazin, who is said to be a huge fan of the game, said: “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last Of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil.”

Neil Druckmann added: “From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last Of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last Of Us to life as a television show.”

Chris Parnell, the Co-President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, said: “This is the first of many shows we intend to develop with our friends at PlayStation Productions. The Last Of Us is a brilliant achievement in storytelling and character development, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to work with this team to adapt it.”

It’s currently unknown when HBO’s adaption of the game will release and it may not be for a few years. Despite this, fans have already begun speculating who will play the game’s titular characters.

Until then, fans have The Last Of Us Part II which is set for release in just over two months. Watch this space for more news on The Last Of Us.
