New ‘Star Wars’ Game Leaks On PlayStation Network

A brand new Star Wars game has leaked via an update on the PlayStation Network.

The game was spotted by Twitter account @PSNRelease, a bot that tracks when new games are added to the PlayStation Store. In a tweet, the bot shared a promotional image for the game while also revealing its name; Project Maverick.

Soon after the game was leaked, Kotaku confirmed that Maverick is the “smaller, more unusual project” the media site had reported on last month. According to Kotaku’s report, the game is being developed by the Montreal-based studio EA Motive.

The promotional image that leaked shows -wing ships moving towards a Star Destroyer. This suggests that the game is set during the events of A New Hope and the recently released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video games.

What’s more, Gematsu reported that background music for the game’s PS4 page also leaked, as well as a tag implying that the game will include multiplayer services. The leak also revealed that the game is not for virtual reality.

Although the game was only leaked yesterday, many fans have already speculated that the game could be a remaster of the old Rogue Squadron video games which were released on Microsoft Windows and Nintendo 64 back in the late 1990s.

EA’s Cancelled Star Wars Games

The news comes a week after Kotaku revealed that Electronic Arts (EA) had cancelled a planned spin-off based on its Star Wars: Battlefront series. The game, which was codenamed Viking was planned for a release in 2020 but was instead cancelled.

Before Vikings, two other games were cancelled by EA. Reports from Kotaku’s various sources have revealed that development on the first game began back in 2015 at EA studio Visceral Games. The studio spent two years developing the game which was heist-based and codenamed Ragtag before EA shut down Visceral and cancelled the game.

Canadian studio EA Vancouver began development on a second game known as Orca which reportedly used the art assets from Ragtag. The studio continued developing Orca throughout 2018 until it too was cancelled. Around the same time, there were rumours that EA was setting up a smaller project to replace it, scheduled for a late 2020 release.

This game became Vikings and was developed as a spin-off to the Battlestar series but with open-world elements. EA called on Criterion, a London-based game studio, to help with the production of the game but sources claim production was hit with difficulties due to the time-difference between studios and ultimately slowed down development.

EA, understanding that the game would not be completed on time, cancelled the project in early 2019 and, as of right now, no Star Wars video game that we officially know of will be releasing later this year.

At the time of writing, two new Star Wars games are in development; a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order and the recently leaked Project Maverick. Maybe the newly leaked game will launch later this year?
