Sony Drops Out Of PAX East Convention Over Coronavirus Concerns

Sony has announced that it will not be attending PAX East 2020 in Boston due to concerns over coronavirus.

The tech giant announced the news on both the PAX website and its official blog, stating that it will not be attending the event due to the growing number of cases in the country. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Content Communications Manager Justin Massongill said:

“Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (Also known as novel coronavirus). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern.”

Organisers of the event expressed their disappointment that Sony had decided to drop out but stated that PAX East will take place as planned. A statement shared on the official website reads:

“PAX East will take place as scheduled with enhanced cleaning and sanitisation across the show, including adhering to the recommendations set forth in the US EPA’s Pathogen Policy regarding cleaning disinfectants effective against the COVID-19 virus.

“We are working closely with the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and following local, state and federal public health guidelines, including those issued by the CDC. For more information on those measures and the virus”.

It continues: “While we are saddened that Sony will no longer have a presence at PAX East 2020, we look forward to welcoming our friends at Sony to future PAX events and are focused on making PAX East 2020 a successful and enjoyable event for all attendees and exhibitors.”

The convention takes place between February 27th and March 1st and PlayStation was set to include a playable demo for Naughty Dog’s eagerly awaited PS4 game The Last Of Us Part II as well as unveil details about the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake.

When Will Sony Reveal The PS5?

With the cancellation at PAX East and Sony’s decision to pull out of E3 2020, many have been wondering when the tech giant will be unveiling its PS5 console. According to reports, Sony will only be unveiling the console when the “time is right”.

In a financial earnings call, Sony’s Senior Executive Vice President Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki commented on the PS5 and said it will only be revealed when Sony feels that the time is right. He later added that the PS5 will follow a similar release schedule from the past.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell when that may be and with the console set to release in only a few months, we’re hoping that Sony decides when to unveil the console soon, particularly since Microsoft already showed off its Xbox Series X back in December.

Even when the console is officially unveiled, it’s likely that Sony will still keep some details secret, including full specs and the price.
