Nintendo has announced an Animal Crossing-themed Switch console.

The special edition console will be dropping in Japan in March for $299.99 alongside upcoming game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, it’s been reported that the US will receive the special console one week earlier on March 13th.

Nintendo announced the new console last night, sharing images of the console in a tweet reading: “A #NintendoSwitc system inspired by #AnimalCrossing: New Horizons is on the way! With unique Joy-Con controllers, a custom design on the back, and a special Nintendo Switch dock, it’s the perfect way to start your island life. Available 3/13 for $299.99.”

In a follow-up tweet, Nintendo then announced a special carrying case also themed after the game: “The #NintendoSwitch #AnimalCrossing: New Horizons Aloha Edition Carrying Case & Screen Protector will also be available for purchase on 3/13!”

Although a European or Australian release wasn’t mentioned in the tweets, reports have stated that Nintendo’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing suggests that the new console will be available in those markets on March 20th.

A description of the Animal Crossing-themed console on the game’s official website reads: “The system takes design inspiration from the new game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (sold separately), with lovely pastel green and blue Joy-Con controllers that are white on the back, white wrist straps and a white Nintendo Switch dock, adorned with images of recognisable characters Tom Nook and Nooklings Timmy and Tommy.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The new Animal Crossing game will be releasing in March and the life-simulation game follows previous instalments in which players assume the role of a customisable character and build up a town while the game progresses in real-time.

In the new instalment, players move to a deserted island which they explore and develop into a community filled with anthropomorphic animals, many of which are villagers which the players can interact with and form relationships with.

Earlier this month, Nintendo Dream magazine published a spread re-introducing over 30 villagers from previous instalments. The spread also revealed new fashion choices, including the ability for animal villagers to wear sleeved clothing.

Promotion stickers for the game were unveiled last week and revealed another slew of available villagers and other characters including squirrel Filbert, Tom Nook, Timmy and Tommy Nook, Isabelle, the Able sisters, singer KK Slider, Lily the frog, and dozens more.

According to Nintendo, the new game will feature a crafting mechanic. New Horizons will also support up to eight players in a multiplayer party and four residents in each village on one console.

Fans of the franchise have waited for a new game on the Switch console since it first launched in 2017. The previous main instalment in the serieswas Animal Crossing: New Leaf which released on the Nintendo 3DS handheld system in 2013.

Like New Leaf, the upcoming installment in the franchise will shake things up by introducing new mechanics, villagers and a brand new environment, and fans can’t wait.
