A New ‘Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic’ Game Is Reportedly In The Works

Critically acclaimed Star Wars video game Knights Of The Old Republic is reportedly getting a remake.

A new report from Cinelinx states that two sources “familiar” with Disney’s video game plans have both claimed that a new Knights Of The Old Republic is currently being developed but it’s unknown whether the new game will be a reboot or a sequel to the original.

What the sources have confirmed, however, is that the game will “integrate elements from the first two games in order to bring certain things into the current Star Wars canon”.

The original Knights Of The Old Republic video game was developed by BioWare and released in 2003. A sequel titled Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II – The Sith Lords released in 2004 and the RPG games have remained classics among fans to this day.

There have been rumours of a remake or sequel for years and if Cinelinx’s sources are true (Cinelinx correctly leaked details of the upcoming Obi-Wan TV show last year), there could very well be a new Star Wars game on the horizon. However, it’s still unclear who may develop the upcoming game.

What’s more, the rumours have surfaced after Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed last year at Star Wars Celebration that a film based on Knights Of The Old Republic is in the works. After being asked about the potential film, Kennedy said: “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall.”

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

News of the new game comes just months after EA and Respawn released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Since its release, the game has received praise from fans and critics alike and broke sales records. Although there will reportedly be no DLC, a sequel has already been greenlit.

In an episode of the AIAS Game Maker’s Podcast, game director Stig Asmussen has said that the game was originally rejected by Lucasfilm when Respawn pitched it to the company. Asmussen recalled how the game developers had to convince Lucasfilm to green-light the game.

He said: “I pitched, ‘Hey, what if we do a game about Jedi and Force powers? They were not super comfortable with that. They threw it back, ‘What about blasters or bounty hunters?’”

However, Asmussen argued back to convince the firm to accept the game. He said in the podcast: “The Jedi is the Holy Grail. To make a game about Jedi, you’ve got to earn it. There was a little bit of back and forth, but they could see where I was coming from and said, ‘All right, we can start having a conversation about making a game about Force users, but not Jedi.’ And then the game comes out and its name is Jedi.’”

Not much is known about what the sequel to Fallen Order will entail, but fans are hoping that it will continue the story of Jedi Knight Cal Kestis after the events of the first game.
