Marvel’s Avengers Has Been Delayed To September

Crystal Dynamics has announced that its upcoming video game Marvel’s Avengers has been delayed to September 2020.

The game was scheduled to be released in May but was delayed so the game publisher can “deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience” and to provide the creators with additional development time.

The news was announced on the Crystal Dynamics website in which the publisher stated: “As fans ourselves, it’s an honour and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world.

“When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel’s Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine-tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.”

The statement continued: “The worldwide teams working on Marvel’s Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you’ve shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can’t wait to show you more. We apologise for the delay. We’re confident it will be worth the wait.”

Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel video game will feature a large roster of characters from the comic book universe including Iron Man, Captain America, Ms Marvel, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, and more.

The game is set in an alternative universe five years after the Avengers disbanded following an incident on A-Day in which a large portion of San Francisco was destroyed and the death of Captain America. With the world under threat once more, players are tasked with aiding the heroes to uncover the truth about the incident while avenging Captain America’s death.

Fan Backlash

When the game was first unveiled last year, fans criticised and voiced disappointed over how the characters looked. Crystal Dynamics responded by stating that they had no plans to change the character designs, only polish them.

In a new interview with the latest issue of PlayStation Magazine, Marvel’s Avengers Creative Director Shaun Escayg stated that the studio was expecting backlash from fans of the comic book and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

He said: “This is 80 years of Marvel history to play with, and you know, a lot of people forget, but when the movies first came out, there was an uproar from fans. Like, ‘This is not how Iron man speaks!’ And now we face the same thing with the game. We kind of anticipated that.”

As Escayg states, fans criticised the creative decisions made in 2008’s Iron Man but the film eventually led to the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has gone on to become one of the most successful movie franchises of all time.

Escayg hopes fans of the comic book and film franchise will respond similarly to the movies and enjoy the alternative take on the beloved characters. Since the game is delayed until September this year, however, we’ll have to wait to find out.
