Founder and CEO of SpaceX, Tesla and a bunch of other companies, and the Most Innovative Leader of 2019 as per Forbes, Elon Musk recently stated that you don’t need a college degree to work on his automotive and energy Tesla.
Last Sunday Musk tweeted you still don’t need a college degree to work in Tesla. He responded with a “Yes” when asked, “Do you still stand firmly on not requiring college degrees?”
This is not the first time the Paypal founder has expressed his lack of seriousness about a college degree, especially billionaires like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and even Mark Zuckerberg didn’t clear college to become who they are. In a 2014 interview with Auto Bild, Musk said: there’s no need even to have a college degree at all, or even high school” to work in Tesla. He replied this in a question to which college he preferred potential Tesla employees studied before hiring him or her.
Musk has solid reasons to back up his claim. According to him it wasn’t always necessary that a person who has graduated from a great college would be capable of great things. He gave the examples of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Oracle founder Larry Ellison to say even if these people didn’t graduate from college it would have been a good idea to hire them. But musk isn’t a dropout himself and has attended the University of Pennsylvania and received an undergraduate degree in physics and economics.
Now, if Musk isn’t looking for your college degree the question arises what he looks for. He said he looks for the “evidence of exceptional ability” in his potential employees rather than any prestigious degree. He asks interview candidates about the kind of problems they encountered in their previous jobs and how they went about solving them. He holds the skill of problem-solving in high regard.
Musk also goes in-depth and asks questions about these achievements so that the candidates cannot bluff or take credit for other’s work. If a person is lying he wouldn’t be able to answer such in-depth questions.
