Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 Could Have The First Ever Foldable Glass Display

Earlier this month, an image surfaced online showing a foldable smartphone with a clamshell design. It was alleged to be Samsung’s next foldable device after this year’s Galaxy Fold. Now according to a new report, the device could be using glass instead of plastic for its screen.

The news comes from reliable tipster Ice Universe who in a tweet claimed that Samsung has created an “ultra-thin glass cover” for its next foldable. He suggests the smooth and unwrinkled appearance of the screen of the unknown device as proof. The plastic screen of the foldable devices often looks rippled when seen from an angle with more creases over time.

The technology is certainly not impossible and Samsung has the means to achieve it. The company applied for trademarks in Europe for something it calls “Samsung Ultra Thin Glass” or “UTG.” Some reports have already speculated that this material will be used for its next foldable to be named as Samsung Fold 2.

It is no secret that manufacturers are pouring money into this technology. The foldable glass will be an important step for getting foldable into the mass market. Glass is more resilient than the currently used plastic polymers that would solve the quality issues as well as increase longevity. Apple supplier Corning is among those known to be developing the materials and the iPhone maker is waiting for a reliable material before it launches own foldable.

Samsung has not confirmed this claim of using a glass display on its next foldable. We don’t even know if the images belong to the “Fold 2” smartphone. But the technology does seem possible and Samsung is one of the manufacturers we can expect to bring innovations like foldable glass. We expect to hear more about the company’s plans early next year.
