You must be aware that the latest iPhones for 2019, and also most of 2020, have been released by Apple and they have been named as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro series of phones. However, we have known that they don’t come with 5G support of any sort. Now, it is also worth noting that we currently don’t have proper 5G infrastructure in majority parts of the world. This means that the 5G support on iPhones currently does not make any sense. But we do know that the next year and the year after will be when 5G should spread across the world. Therefore, we also expect all the smartphones as well as iPhones to come with 5G support.

A new report now mentions that Apple also has plans to develop its own 5G chip which will be seen inside the iPhones. However, the disappointing part about this report is that it might not be until 2022 iPhones that we see Apple’s 5G modem. This does not mean that the iPhones will not have 5G support before 2022. But it will mean that Apple might use a 5G modem from Qualcomm or others. Currently, Apple is supplied chipsets by Qualcomm and it has promised to deliver 5G modems for the next-year iPhones.

According to the report, a realistic timeframe for the development of 5G modems by Apple is 2022. While the chip might be manufactured earlier and the fabrication can be done, there should be time given for testing, optimization, certification to ensure compliance with global standards, as well as the domestic FCC. Fast Company report reveals that while the 5G modem will be available by 2022, an integrated platform will only arrive in 2023 which means we will have a processor with in-built 5G modem like the recently released Huawei’s Kirin 990 as well as upcoming Snapdragon 865 chip from Qualcomm.
