We have seen that one of the most important things in a smartphone, apart from the RAM and software, is its processor. It does not matter if your phone has plenty of RAM and fastest storage as well as great software if you don’t have a capable processor. For this reason, we have seen that Apple’s iPhones run smoothly even on 4GB RAM while some of the Android smartphones with 8GB RAM fail to do.
At this point, there are a handful of chipmakers available in the market like Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek apart from Huawei. However, we can say that Apple locks its processors for their own devices while Huawei does the same. Even Samsung was not allowing its processors to run on different devices but it has started to supply its processors now.
Therefore, we can say that there is a chance we will see Samsung’s Exynos, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or MediaTek’s MTK chips on an Android device. Thus, the comparison for processors should be between them only. And at the moment, we can say that Qualcomm is way ahead in the Android processor game compared to MediaTek or Samsung. The latest Snapdragon 855 and 855+ processors from Qualcomm released this year have been very satisfactory in performance.
However, Qualcomm is not just focused on performance with its latest chip as it also looks to have 5G support as well. So we will get to see a variant of the Snapdragon 865 chipset with in-built 5G support just like Huawei’s Kirin 990 processor. It is now reported by PhoneArena that Qualcomm is looking to release its Snapdragon 865 processor earlier compared to last year. Traditionally, Qualcomm’s latest flagship processors are released in December while we might see Snapdragon 865 with in-built 5G support released in November. The first smartphone to be released with a Snapdragon 865, as seen from last few years, will be the Galaxy S11 series.
